We create performances in places where you might not expect to see theatre. We have produced shows in locations such as the Finnkino Kinopalatsi cinema, Turku Castle, a shopping center, a Föli city bus, a parking garage, and even in a kitchen. For the audience: This opens up the possibility to experience familiar and everyday places in a new light. For the art: This means that elements of the chosen environment become an integral part of the work. Every location has its own history, architecture, visual illusion, unique scent, and soundscape. These factors become active elements of the performance, or "fellow players" that the script and actors must engage with.
Site-specificity places high demands on the artists, who must study the performance site meticulously. It is crucial to identify the location's character and its geographical and socio-political role, without forgetting practical possibilities and limitations. However, this creates an opportunity to produce shows where the viewer undergoes surprising and unpredictable experiences and adventures that shake up the concept of traditional theatre, increase awareness, and facilitate unexpected encounters.
Occasionally, we create performances in more traditional settings, appearing on stages like Tehdas Teatteri or the Turku City Theatre. Yet, site-specificity remains always a part of us: no stage is a completely neutral space. Every venue is defined by its personality, location, socio-political role, and practices. The Spiritual Airline always strives to view the stage as part of the working group and the process. That is to say treating the venue as if it were another actor and a vital part of the ensemble.
For us, every departure is part of the destination.
Since 2021, Grus Grus Theatre has adopted the moniker "The Spiritual Airline." This travel metaphor defines our operations: we offer viewers "journeys" in the form of performances. These journeys lower the threshold for audiences to experience unconventional performances and explore contemporary theatre more deeply. In everyday speech, traveling is associated with curiosity, encountering the unknown, and experiencing something new. After a Grus Grus performance, the viewer looks at their own reality, everyday life, and environment as if they have just returned from a trip, changed, and from a new perspective. These performances, or journeys, make it possible to travel mentally to distant places without burdening the environment.
