Turun maailmannäyttely – Curated by the Aura River
On Turku Day, 20 September 2026
The Aura River clean-up dive on Turku Day (20 September) is an annual tradition much loved by the people of Turku. This year, the junk brought up from the river will go straight into the hands of artists as soon as it reaches the shore, and from it an artwork will be built on the dumpster located on the riverbank next to Pinella. The installation by lighting designer Jarkko Forsman from Kaarina, set designer and puppet theatre artist Johanna Latvala from Turku, and visual artist Tuomo Vuoteenoma from Joutsa, who specializes in kinetic sculptures, will be a surprise for both the audience and the artists, since no one can know for certain what will rise from the river this year.
Made from materials that don't belong in the river but have been thrown in regardless, the work reflects on the transience and cyclical nature of people's everyday objects and living environments, and will likely include at least a few electric scooters. The work will be completed, in a dramatic final sprint, on Turku Day at 2:30 pm and will remain on public display until the dumpster and its contents are hauled away. That is, at least until Monday morning. Come follow the work's creation process and the finished piece throughout Turku Day!
The work is part of the repertoire of Turku's Grus Grus Teatteri and belongs to the Turun Maailmannäyttely (Turku World Expo) – a series of works culminating in an international exhibition held in Turku's abandoned spaces in summer 2027.
Turun maailmannäyttely has been supported by the Arts Promotion Centre Finland and the Finnish Cultural Foundation's Varsinais-Suomi Regional Fund and Aura of Puppets. Tuomo Vuoteenoma is working on the piece with a personal working grant from the Kone Foundation.
Aurajoen perinteisen siivoustempauksen Traditional Aura river cleaning event is organised by local diver volunteers, Pidä Saaristo siistinä association and Aura river foundation with other local organisations.
