VÄREILEVÄ HARMAA – WAVY GREY

A site-specific Animated Installation

Grey is the color of twilight, mist, and uncertainty. It is a realm of invisibility and insignificance, yet also a space of transitions and mystery. A field of the unknown and "not-knowing" between black and white. The corrugated iron arched hall appearing in Turku’s old railway yard makes one believe that grey truly possesses superpowers of invisibility. How else could one have passed this massive building so many times without even noticing it?

The hall has demonstrably stood its ground since 1901, as one of Finland’s first corrugated iron buildings, marking the arrival of a new wave of architecture in the country. At the same time, it shimmers by the railway tracks like a station hall that appeared just moments ago from another reality. A place where one could imagine boarding any vehicle: a car, a train, an airplane, a boat, or even an airship.

Inside the hall, the grey intensifies into a lively chatter between different values. Ruggedly decayed yet impressively strong in its endurance of time, the building is the rightful protagonist of the installation. It is a creature into whose consciousness we have been invited. It clangs, clicks, whistles, and howls, responding with its own vibrations to the sounds of the installation's construction. The high-arching roof shelters hundreds of horsepower and tons of potential for movement. In the midst of the twilight, the tools of the goldsmith who previously owned the space glimmer.

This magical place is rarely open to the public. Therefore, it is a special joy to announce that soon the doors to this world will be open. But only for three days!
